Yesterday I posted a piece about the proposed Islamic community center two blocks away from the World Trade Center site that has created quite a stir in the mainstream media. The post generated some interesting thoughts from two readers.
One said, " Building a Mosque at the chosen location is as appropriate as it would have been to build a Japanese Cultural Center in 1950 at Pearl Harbor."
Another astute reader pointed out that there is a Japanese Cultural Center near Pearl Harbor. However, this site wasn't built until 1986.
The point of my original post was one of basic tolerance, and more importantly to get over the fear of the past decade. Raging against a community center nine years after the fact is indicative of people who live in the past and fear the future. It's time to be in the present.
Let's take it a step further. Although Bill Maher's views on religion are not tolerant, he illustrates critical point in this. If a rational, scientific majority of people were in control of politics, all of this religious squabbling would be exposed as just a silly waster of time. Get over it!
